I’m all for this. I think it is direly important that there be less people.

This just made me very mad and also made little sense. I agree that the world could theoretically be a better place with less people, especially with the high number of people suffering from starvation and less than adequate living conditions. However, I find this idea totally absurd. It is humorously unrealistic and would create hundreds of its own problems. What would life be like for the last generation on Earth?

“But, will enough of us reach the level of awareness needed to voluntarily reverse our present course toward involuntary extinction? We can only hope so, and try to bring it about.We’re the only species evolved enough to consciously go extinct for the good of all life, or which needs to.” This convicted point of view infuriates me. I see the beauty of a human-less Earth, but this? Sacrifice and surrender are not how I roll.

I don’t agree that people should stop procreating until they are extinct, but I think it is irresponsible to keep making people. I think if every couple had one child everywhere in the world the situation could be rectified. Since this isn’t going to happen in areas where religion interferes and people have more the responsible folks need to not make any babies. Adoption is such a better idea. I don’t see how you expect anything to get done without some sacrifice and surrender, to me, is the notion that we can just continue as a species the way we have been and it will all work out for everyone left when we are gone. And finally, I don’t see how you can disagree with their “convicted point of view” when yours is obviously hypocritical. Improvement is not possible without sacrifice.

If we agree that there should be less people on the Earth, but that humans should not voluntarily go extinct, wherein lies the disagreement? It was the self-sacrificing, martyr-like idea of extinction that tore me up. Of course, improvement often calls for sacrifice; I just hope that the entirety of the human race does not become one of those things that must be sacrificed.
